Birds, Home, Astronomy: these are the particular images that convey my subject. Relationships, Connections, Transition: these are the moments of the complex human experience I investigate. Through lithographic techniques, I rely on the personal and emotional connections between being-to-being, being-to-nature, and being-to-self to build on the complexities surrounding connection, migration and what creates a “home.”
In my works, I explore how the physical structure of a home lies secondary to the expression of feelings that arise in personal interactions; these internal moments build a sense of security and identity within the self that defines “home”. I also incorporate bird imagery to symbolize mobility and freedom, as birds speak to flight, transition, and building a home any place that offers safety and peace. Further, the cosmos speak to the perception of self-awareness through energy and the desideratum of belonging.
Using a variety of printmaking techniques—as well as bookmaking, drawing and collage—I create pieces that resonate with the idea of home, what it takes to create a home through love and companionship, and how a home can be torn apart with conflict and rigidity. As I combine this awareness of home with the imagery of birds and celestial space, these works touch on the human desire to belong to something, to belong somewhere, and how we come to define that.
